Audio signal analysis and processing

Audio signals can be converted to a 2D representation — spectrogram — by a Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT).

Many image processing methods can be applied to spectrograms for the purposes of noise reduction, instrument extraction, identification. Multiresolution methods can improve precision of spectrogram analysis and reduce artifacts of a typical STFT processing, like ringing or energy smearing.
